Want to protect your Windows-powered machine from viruses, worms, Trojans, rootkits, spyware, and other security threats but you don’t want to spend any money on an expensive antivirus product? If your answer is “yes”, then I invite you to get Avira Free Antivirus, a completely free security solution that provides basic protection against a variety of threats. Millions of users from all corners of the world rely on it to keep their systems and their data safe.

The system requirements for running Avira Free Antivirus are as follows: Windows operating system (32 or 64-bit edition of Windows 7 or Windows XP SP2 and SP3), at least 512MB of RAM for Windows XP, at least 512MB of RAM for Windows 7, at least 150MB of free disk space, 1GHz processor or better, admin right, internet connection, and a web browser. The last three are needed during the installation.

Speaking about the installation, a setup wizard will let you install Avira Free Antivirus in the language of your choice. Before launching the installation process, the wizard will check for incompatible software. Then it will ask you to pick between an Express Installation (recommended for regular users; all the standard components will be installed) and a Custom Installation (recommended for advanced users; allows you to pick the program features you want to install).

After the installation process completes, you will be presented with a configuration wizard that will help you with the basic configuration of the product. You will be invited to activate and configure AHeAD(Advanced Heuristic Analysis and Detection) heuristics that can detect new, previously unknown viruses and malware, pick the threat categories the program should scan for (adware, spyware, dialers, phishing, etc), pick the Real-Time protection start mode (normal start, secure start), and choose if you wish to perform a quick system scan once you’re done with the Configuration Wizard.

All of the application’s features and functions are nicely presented as a list on the left hand side. You will thus have easy access to the System Scanner, Real-Time Protection, Scheduler, and other features. The simple truth of the matter is that you will very quickly get accustomed to the interface – even if you are a complete novice.

From a functionality point of view, Avira Free Antivirus has the following to offer: real-time protection against viruses, worms, Trojans, rootkits, and other threats; blocks companies that want to track your browsing activities; blocks adware and spyware; presents a security rating in your search results; run on-demand scans or schedule them to be performed automatically; print out reports.

Avira Free Antivirus offers a basic level of protection. For extra security and extra functionality, you should consider getting a paid solution. You could get Avira Antivirus Premium, Avira Internet Security, or Avira Internet Security Plus.

Avira Free Antivirus is a great choice for anyone who wants efficient antivirus protection at no cost.

Pros

Support for multiple languages is provided. The system requirements for running Avira Free Antivirus aren’t that high. A setup wizard will help you quickly install Avira Free Antivirus on your PC. A configuration wizard will help you set up the basic configuration of the product. Very little time will be spent on figuring out the interface. Avira Free Antivirus provides real-time protection against viruses, Trojans, and other malware. This application is free.

Cons

Several security features are not available; you must upgrade to a paid version to get them.
